How to Read a B Complex Label: mg, mcg, DFE and %DV Explained

Two B complex bottles can look alike and contain very different things. Here's how to compare them in under a minute.

Quick Answer

Start with the serving size, then check which B vitamins are listed, the amount of each and the %DV. Watch three numbers against their upper limits: niacin (35mg), B6 (100mg) and folic acid (1,000mcg, which is about 1,667mcg DFE)[1][2][3]. Then look at forms, sugar and whether the product is third-party tested.

Step 1: Check the serving size

All amounts on the panel are per serving, not per gummy or pill. A serving of 3 gummies means you need three to get the listed amounts. Also check servings per container to compare cost per day.

Step 2: Understand the units

  • mg (milligram) is 1,000 times bigger than mcg (microgram).
  • Niacin, B6, pantothenic acid and vitamin C are listed in mg. B12, biotin and folate are listed in mcg.
  • Folate is listed as mcg DFE, which accounts for folic acid being absorbed better than food folate[3]. See Folate vs. Folic Acid.

Step 3: Read the %DV

%DV compares the amount to a daily reference value for adults. Over 100% isn't automatically a problem. For example, B12 is often listed well above 100% because only a small fraction of a large oral dose is absorbed: about 2% at 500mcg[4].

Step 4: Check the upper limits

  • Niacin: 35mg/day from supplements[1]
  • Vitamin B6: 100mg/day[2]
  • Folic acid: 1,000mcg/day[3]

Add up every product you take, including a multivitamin.

Step 5: Look at the forms

  • Niacinamide doesn't cause flushing. Nicotinic acid can[1].
  • B6 is usually pyridoxine HCl. B12 is often cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin.
  • Check "Other Ingredients" for sugar, gelatin (not vegan) and allergens.

Example: our B Complex label

Serving size 1 gummy, 60 per bottle. Vitamin C 10mg (11% DV), niacin 12mg as niacinamide (75%), B6 1.2mg (71%), folate 430mcg DFE (108%), B12 20mcg (833%), biotin 50mcg (167%), pantothenic acid 6mg (120%), inositol 3.5mg (no DV). 10 calories and 2g added sugar.

Frequently asked questions

What does the dagger (†) mean on a label?

It means no Daily Value has been set for that ingredient, as with inositol.

Why is B12 833% DV?

Because only a small share of oral B12 is absorbed at higher doses, and B12 has no upper limit[4].

Are supplements approved by the FDA?

No. The FDA doesn't approve supplements before sale, which is why independent testing matters[5].
