B Vitamins and Energy: What They Can and Can't Do

B vitamins show up on every energy drink label. Here's what they really do for energy, and what they don't.

Quick Answer

B vitamins help your cells release energy from carbohydrates, fats and protein, and B12 and folate are needed to make healthy red blood cells[1]. If you're low in them, correcting it can reduce fatigue. If your levels are already fine, extra B vitamins don't give you more energy, and they don't work like caffeine[1][2].

How do B vitamins help with energy?

B vitamins are coenzymes. They don't contain energy themselves, but the enzymes that break down food need them to work. Niacin becomes NAD, pantothenic acid becomes coenzyme A, and B6 and biotin help process protein, fats and carbs[1][3]. B12 and folate are needed to make red blood cells, which carry oxygen to your muscles and brain[4].

When do B vitamins help tiredness?

When you're actually low. Low B12 or folate can cause anemia, and anemia causes weakness and tiredness[4]. People at higher risk include older adults, vegans, people taking metformin or acid reducers, and people with digestive conditions. See Signs You May Be Low in B Vitamins.

Why don't B vitamins work like caffeine?

Caffeine is a stimulant that acts on your brain within minutes. B vitamins aren't stimulants. Once your body has enough, extra B vitamins are mostly excreted rather than turned into more energy[2]. The "energy" from an energy drink comes from caffeine and sugar, not the B vitamins.

What else causes low energy?

  • Short or poor-quality sleep
  • Low iron or vitamin D
  • Thyroid problems
  • Dehydration and skipped meals
  • Stress, depression and some medications

If you're tired most days for weeks, see a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

How long does B complex take to work?

If you're deficient, it can take weeks for levels and symptoms to improve. If you're not, you likely won't notice a change.

Will B complex keep me awake?

Normal doses aren't stimulants, so they're unlikely to affect sleep.

Is B12 the most important B vitamin for energy?

B12 gets the most attention because deficiency is common in certain groups, but all the B vitamins play a part.
