"Stress B complex" is a whole product category. Here's what the trials actually found.

Quick Answer
A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis found that B vitamin supplements modestly improved self-reported stress in healthy and at-risk adults. It found a possible benefit for depressive symptoms in at-risk groups and no clear effect on anxiety[1]. B6, B12 and folate are involved in making neurotransmitters[2], but a B complex is a small piece of managing stress, not a treatment for anxiety or depression.

Why are B vitamins linked to stress?
B6 helps make serotonin, dopamine and GABA. Folate and B12 are needed for methylation, a process involved in making and breaking down neurotransmitters. Low B12 and folate have been linked to mood problems in observational studies[2].
What does the research show?
Young and colleagues pooled randomized trials of B vitamin supplements lasting at least four weeks. They found:
- A small but significant improvement in stress scores in healthy and at-risk people
- A trend toward benefit for depressive symptoms, mainly in at-risk groups
- No significant effect on anxiety[1]
Most trials used multi-B formulas, often with other nutrients, so it's hard to say which vitamin did the work.
What are the limits?
The effects were modest, the trials were fairly short and they varied in dose and formula[1]. People who already have good B vitamin status may notice little. If stress, anxiety or low mood are affecting your daily life, talk to a doctor or mental health professional.
What else helps with stress?
- Regular sleep and wake times
- Daily movement, even short walks
- Breathing exercises (see Breathing Exercises for Stress and Sleep)
- Limiting caffeine and alcohol
- Talking to someone you trust
