The Post-Holiday Sleep Reset: Getting the Whole Family Back on Schedule

Two weeks of late movies, travel and lazy mornings can leave the whole house on “vacation time.” The good news: body clocks can shift back, and there's a simple way to do it.

Written by Vita Globe Editorial Team | Reviewed against peer-reviewed circadian research and AASM guidance

How do you reset your family's sleep after the holidays?

Start 4 to 7 days before school or work resumes. Move wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes a day, get bright light soon after waking, and dim the house in the evening. Light is the body clock's main cue[1], and bright evening light delays the body's own melatonin[2]. Bedtime follows once wake time is fixed.

Caveat: Shifting earlier is harder than shifting later, so teens and night owls may need the full week.

Why do holidays throw off everyone's sleep?

Holiday breaks stack up everything that pushes body clocks later: late dinners, late screens, sleeping in, travel across time zones, and less morning daylight in winter. Each late night nudges the internal clock a bit later.

Researchers call the gap between your body clock and your required schedule “social jet lag”[3]. After a long break it can feel a lot like flying east: wide awake at 11 p.m., groggy at 7 a.m.

Should you fix bedtime or wake-up time first?

Wake-up time. It's hard to force yourself (or a kid) to fall asleep early, but you can control when the alarm goes off and when the curtains open. An earlier wake time plus morning light gradually pulls sleepiness earlier in the evening.

Days before school/work Wake-up target
7 days out Current wake time minus 15 to 30 minutes
5 days out Another 15 to 30 minutes earlier
3 days out Another 15 to 30 minutes earlier
1 day out School/work wake time

Let bedtime drift earlier as sleepiness arrives. For younger children, restart the familiar bedtime routine even if bedtime itself is still a bit late. Routines are linked with falling asleep faster and sleeping longer in young kids[4]. Our back-to-school sleep reset has a step-by-step version for school-age kids.

How can light speed up the reset?

In a well-known study, a week of camping with only natural light shifted people's internal clocks earlier and brought them into line with sunrise and sunset[1]. You can borrow that effect:

  • Morning: open blinds right away, eat breakfast by a window, or take a short walk outside.
  • Evening: switch to lamps after dinner and lower overhead lights. Room light before bed delayed melatonin onset in a lab study[2].
  • Screens: set a family screens-off time about an hour before the youngest child's bedtime.

What if you traveled across time zones?

Coming home from the west coast to the east (flying east) is usually the harder direction, because it requires shifting earlier. Use the same light plan, and expect it to take a few days for everyone to fully settle. Our guide to melatonin for jet lag covers timing for adults.

The honest summary

  • Holidays push body clocks later, which feels like jet lag when routines restart.
  • Fix wake-up time first, then let bedtime follow.
  • Morning light and dim evenings are the most effective, free tools.
  • Give the reset 4 to 7 days, not one night.

Can melatonin help with a holiday sleep reset?

Some of the more promising melatonin research is on shifting sleep timing, as with jet lag[5], which is similar to a post-holiday reset. It's best used short-term and alongside the light and schedule changes above, not instead of them.

For kids, check with your pediatrician before using melatonin, and store it like medicine, out of reach[6]. Most children reset with routine alone.

Vita Globe Happy Sleep Bundle

For families who want an occasional, short-term backup during the reset week, the Happy Sleep Bundle keeps adult and kids' doses separate. It pairs our Melatonin 5mg Gummies for adults (5mg per serving) with Kids' Melatonin 1mg Gummies (1mg per gummy), so each person uses the formula dosed for their age group. Both are non-GMO and gluten-free, tested by an independent third-party lab, and intended for occasional sleeplessness. Check with your pediatrician before giving melatonin to a child.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reset a child's sleep schedule?

Usually 4 to 7 days with a gradual approach. Shifting 15 to 30 minutes earlier each day is easier than one big jump.

Should my kids sleep in the day before school starts?

Try not to. Sleeping in pushes the body clock later again. Keep the school wake-up time for at least the last two or three days of break.

Is it okay to let teens stay up late on break?

Some flexibility is fine, but very late nights make the return to school harder. Aim to keep their wake time within an hour or two of the school schedule.

Does a nap help with the reset?

Short naps can help young kids who still nap. For older kids and adults, long or late-afternoon naps can make it harder to fall asleep earlier at night.
