Can You Overdose on Melatonin Gummies?

Melatonin gummies look and taste like candy, which is exactly why this question comes up so often. For adults, taking too much usually means feeling rough rather than being in danger. For young children, the numbers tell a more serious story. Here's what the data show, and how to keep your household safe.

Can you overdose on melatonin gummies?

You can take too much. In adults, the usual result is side effects like drowsiness, headache, dizziness or nausea; a systematic review of clinical trials found no life-threatening adverse events[2]. Children are a bigger concern: a CDC report found pediatric melatonin ingestions reported to poison centers rose 530% from 2012 to 2021, with more than 4,000 hospitalizations over the decade[1]. Store gummies up and away, and call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) if a child gets into them.

Caveat: Trials don't test very large doses, so the upper safety limit in adults isn't well defined.

What happens if an adult takes too much melatonin?

For most healthy adults, too much melatonin shows up as an exaggerated version of its usual side effects. A 2019 systematic review of melatonin trials found the most commonly reported adverse events were daytime sleepiness, headache, dizziness and feeling cold. Adverse events were few and generally mild to moderate, most resolved on their own or after stopping melatonin, and none were life-threatening[2].

You might notice:

  • Strong drowsiness or grogginess that lingers into the next day
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vivid dreams

The NIH notes that safety at doses higher than the body normally produces isn't well understood, and that people with epilepsy or who take blood thinners should use melatonin only under medical supervision[3]. Combining melatonin with alcohol or other things that make you drowsy is also a bad idea; see melatonin and alcohol. For dose guidance, read how much melatonin is too much?

How common are accidental ingestions in children?

More common than most parents realize. A 2022 report in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report analyzed poison center data on melatonin ingestions in children and teens from 2012 to 2021[1]:

Finding (2012–2021) Number
Total pediatric melatonin ingestions reported 260,435
Annual increase, 2012 to 2021 530% (8,337 to 52,563)
Share involving children age 5 or younger About 84%
Hospitalizations 4,097
ICU admissions 287
Required mechanical ventilation 5
Deaths 2 (both children under 2)

Most children had no symptoms, and serious outcomes were rare, but the trend is clear. The report's authors recommended that health care providers talk with parents about safe storage and appropriate use, and suggested child-resistant packaging be considered[1]. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has also urged parents to talk with a pediatric health care professional before giving melatonin to children[5].

Why can gummies contain more than you expect?

Because melatonin is sold as a supplement, products aren't approved by the FDA before sale, and quality varies. A 2023 study in JAMA tested melatonin gummies sold in the US and found 22 of 25 were inaccurately labeled, with some containing up to about 3.5 times the stated amount[4][3]. An earlier study of melatonin supplements found content ranging from less than half to more than four times the label claim[6].

That means "two gummies" can be a very different amount from one brand to the next, which is one more reason to buy from companies that use independent lab testing and to follow the label serving.

What should you do if someone takes too much?

  • Child got into the bottle? Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (US), even if they seem fine. Have the bottle handy so you can say how many may be missing.
  • Adult took extra and feels drowsy? Don't drive, avoid alcohol, and rest somewhere safe. Call Poison Control for advice.
  • Trouble breathing, won't wake up, or seizure? Call 911 right away.

How should you store melatonin gummies?

  • Keep them up high and out of sight, ideally in a locked cabinet.
  • Close the lid or pouch fully every time, and put it away right after use rather than leaving it on a nightstand.
  • Don't call gummies "candy" around kids.
  • Remind visitors and grandparents to keep their own supplements secured.
  • Keep kids' and adults' products clearly separated so no one grabs the wrong strength.

The honest summary

  • Adults who take too much usually get drowsiness, headache, dizziness or nausea, and serious effects are rare in trials[2].
  • Accidental pediatric ingestions rose 530% from 2012 to 2021, with thousands of hospitalizations[1].
  • Label accuracy varies widely across brands[4].
  • Secure storage and the Poison Control number are your best tools.

Frequently asked questions

How many melatonin gummies is too many?

Stick to the serving on your label. There's no official upper limit, and higher doses mainly raise the chance of side effects[3]. If you've taken more than intended and feel unwell, call Poison Control.

Can melatonin overdose kill you?

In adults, clinical trials haven't identified life-threatening side effects[2]. In the CDC's 10-year review of pediatric cases, two young children died, though the report couldn't fully determine the circumstances[1]. Treat any child ingestion seriously.

My child ate melatonin gummies. What should I do?

Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away, even if your child seems fine. Call 911 if they're hard to wake or having trouble breathing.

How long do the effects of too much melatonin last?

Melatonin has a short half-life, but larger amounts take longer to clear, so drowsiness may last several hours. Read how long melatonin lasts.
