Omega-3 Benefits: What the Research Actually Supports (and What It Doesn't)

Omega-3 gets credited with almost everything, from heart health to mood to joint pain. The NIH's own research summary tells a much more specific — and more useful — story.

What's genuinely well-supported

These are genuine, replicated findings, even if the effect sizes are modest rather than dramatic.

What the evidence doesn't back up

This is the part that tends to get left out of omega-3 marketing. The same 2020 review that found a modest heart benefit found omega-3 supplements had little or no effect on reducing stroke risk. For cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, there's no beneficial effect shown in people already diagnosed, and any preventive benefit remains unclear. For depression, the NIH describes the evidence as low or very low quality, with any possible effect too small to be considered meaningful. Studies haven't found that ADHD symptoms are likely to improve with omega-3 supplementation.
