Folate and folic acid are the same vitamin in different forms, and the "DFE" on your label exists because your body absorbs them differently.

Quick Answer
Folate is vitamin B9 as it occurs naturally in food. Folic acid is the form used in supplements and fortified foods, and your body absorbs it better. DFE (dietary folate equivalents) puts both on the same scale: 1mcg DFE equals 1mcg of food folate or 0.6mcg of folic acid taken with food[1]. Adults need 400mcg DFE a day, 600mcg in pregnancy. The upper limit is 1,000mcg of folic acid a day[1].

What's the difference between folate and folic acid?
Folate is found naturally in leafy greens, beans, peas, asparagus, avocado and citrus. Folic acid is a stable, synthetic form added to enriched grains, cereals and supplements. Your body absorbs only about half the folate in food, but about 85% of folic acid taken with food and nearly all of it on an empty stomach[1].
What does mcg DFE mean on a label?
Because absorption differs, the FDA requires labels to list folate as mcg DFE. Conversions:
- 1mcg DFE = 1mcg food folate
- 1mcg DFE = 0.6mcg folic acid with food
- 1mcg DFE = 0.5mcg folic acid on an empty stomach[1]
So 430mcg DFE, the amount in one of our B Complex gummies, is about 250mcg of folic acid.
How much folate do you need?
- Adults: 400mcg DFE a day
- Pregnancy: 600mcg DFE a day
- Breastfeeding: 500mcg DFE a day
- Upper limit: 1,000mcg folic acid a day from supplements and fortified foods; food folate has no limit[1]
What about pregnancy?
Folic acid lowers the risk of neural tube defects. Anyone who could become pregnant is advised to get 400mcg of folic acid a day from supplements or fortified foods, on top of food folate. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends 400 to 800mcg, starting at least a month before conception[1]. A prenatal vitamin is the usual way to cover this. See B Vitamins During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.
Why does folic acid matter for B12?
High folic acid can correct the anemia caused by low B12 without fixing the nerve damage, which can delay a diagnosis[1]. That's one reason B complex formulas pair folate with B12.

Frequently asked questions
Is methylfolate better than folic acid?
Methylfolate (5-MTHF) is another supplement form. The CDC still recommends folic acid for people who could become pregnant, including those with MTHFR gene variants[1].
Can I get enough folate from food?
Many people can, especially with enriched grains. Pregnancy needs are harder to meet from food alone.
Do any medications affect folate?
Yes, including methotrexate, some seizure medicines and sulfasalazine. See B Complex and Medications.
