Does Melatonin Affect Behavior in Kids?

Some parents notice crankiness, grogginess or a wired evening after starting melatonin. Others hope it will smooth out tough behavior. The research points to a more nuanced answer.

Does melatonin affect behavior in kids?

Mostly indirectly. Melatonin itself isn't a behavior treatment: in a randomized trial of children with ADHD and sleep-onset insomnia, melatonin helped kids fall asleep earlier but didn't change problem behavior or attention[1]. Side effects reported in children include drowsiness, headache, dizziness and agitation[2]. The bigger link is sleep itself — kids who regularly sleep too little have more attention and behavior problems[3].

Caveat: Behavior-related side effects in children are based on limited, mostly short-term studies, so individual responses can vary[4].

How does sleep affect kids' behavior?

Before looking at melatonin, it helps to look at sleep. The AASM's pediatric consensus statement found that regularly sleeping fewer than the recommended hours is associated with attention, behavior and learning problems, while enough sleep is linked with better attention, behavior, memory and emotional regulation[3].

In other words, a tired kid often looks like a "difficult" kid: more meltdowns, shorter fuse, harder time focusing. If melatonin helps a child fall asleep at a reasonable hour, some parents may see calmer days — but that's the sleep, not a direct effect on behavior.

Can melatonin change behavior directly?

The best test of this comes from a double-blind trial of 105 children ages 6–12 with ADHD and chronic trouble falling asleep[1]. Over four weeks, children on melatonin fell asleep about 27 minutes earlier, while the placebo group drifted about 10 minutes later. Total sleep also improved.

But the researchers found no effect on problem behavior, cognitive performance or quality of life compared to placebo. So while melatonin shifted sleep timing, it didn't act as a behavior fix on its own over that time frame.

What behavior-related side effects have been reported?

The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health lists drowsiness, increased bedwetting or nighttime urination, headache, dizziness and agitation as side effects reported in children[2]. The AAP adds that morning sleepiness is among the most common[5].

A 2023 systematic review found melatonin wasn't linked with serious adverse events in children, but non-serious ones were more common than with placebo — and the authors called the evidence limited, urging caution against "complacent use"[4].

What you might notice Possible reason What to do
Grogginess or crankiness in the morning Dose too high or given too late Ask your pediatrician about dose and timing
Agitation or restlessness Reported side effect Stop and call your pediatrician
Bedwetting or more nighttime urination Reported side effect Mention it to your pediatrician
Headache or dizziness Reported side effect Stop and check in with your pediatrician

What should parents do if behavior changes?

If you notice a change after starting melatonin, write down what you're seeing, when you gave it, and the dose. Then share it with your pediatrician. Often the answer is a lower dose, an earlier time, or stopping altogether and focusing on habits. Our full guide to melatonin side effects in kids goes into more detail.

The honest summary

  • Melatonin mainly affects sleep timing — it isn't a behavior treatment.
  • Better sleep can support better daytime behavior, whatever gets you there.
  • Grogginess and agitation are possible; tell your pediatrician if you see them.
  • Routines and consistent sleep schedules support both sleep and behavior[6].

Frequently asked questions

Can melatonin make kids hyper?

Agitation has been reported as a side effect in children[2]. If your child seems wired or restless after melatonin, stop and check with your pediatrician.

Does melatonin make kids moody the next day?

Morning sleepiness is one of the most common side effects[5], which can show up as crankiness. Dose and timing often matter — ask your pediatrician.

Will melatonin help my child's behavior at school?

Not directly. In a trial of children with ADHD, melatonin improved sleep timing but not behavior or attention[1]. Adequate sleep, though, is associated with better attention and behavior[3].

Is melatonin safe for kids long-term?

Long-term effects haven't been well studied[4], which is why experts favor short, supervised use. See our guide on whether kids can take melatonin every night.
